About Calabash
Our Story
Every bridge begins with people reaching out to one another.

Calabash-Bridge began with a simple conviction: that no one who moves to Cornwall to care for others should have to find their feet alone. Many of the people who support our hospitals and care services through the NHS come from other nations, and can find themselves far from their own community. We set out to change that.
Why we started
Our founders saw that Cornwall was not always a welcoming place for the globally educated workforce supporting health and social care here. For a time this was something the community carried quietly, a network of like-minded people supporting one another. After the unrest of 2024, that conversation came into the open, and NHS Cornwall began to listen closely to those most affected.
What became clear is something we had already seen for ourselves: when someone finds their people, whether through a community group, a faith group or a work support network, life in Cornwall changes. People move from simply surviving to beginning to thrive. Calabash-Bridge exists to help that happen, again and again.
How we grew
Through the simple mediums of food, fun and fellowship, a warm welcome has grown into a thriving community, the Calabash tribe, built on love, grace and compassion. Today we connect hundreds of members through our online groups and a regular face-to-face gathering, and we work alongside partners across Cornwall to support one another.
Looking ahead
We have aspirations of doing more, much more. Calabash-Bridge is becoming a Charitable Incorporated Organisation so we can grow the support we offer, reach more people, and keep building one community where everyone belongs.
